Distal biceps tendon rupture

The distal biceps tendon is that part of the biceps muscle which attaches to the elbow (the tendon can be felt when showing off one’s muscles as a thick cord-like structure in front of the elbow). It commonly ruptures when people forcefully extend the elbow against resistance. I am seeing quite a few patients who use anabolic steroids with this injury.

Most people require surgery to reconnect the muscle when it detaches. This is probably one of my favourite operations as most people are very satisfied with the result. It requires a small cut on the front of the elbow and the tendon takes around three months to heal. Range of movement is commenced on the day after surgery with the particular technique that I use.
